Apple Preparing to Seed
Developer Builds of Mac OS X 10.6.5
Tuesday July
20 @ 08:47:50 GMT +02:00
|
MacRumors has received word that Apple is
gearing up to begin seeding certain developers
with builds of Mac OS X 10.6.5
The length of time any one update spends in
developer testing is highly variable, and thus
we do not yet have an estimation of when Mac OS
X 10.6.5 might become available to the general
public. We do believe, however, that the first
developers to get their hands on the testing
builds may see something later this week.

Benchmark Reviews posted a review on the Cooler
Master Elite 430 Computer Case
A quote from the article:
Usually high-end cases are the ones that attract
all the excitement, but the majority of people
will be looking for a well-priced mid tower case
like the Cooler Master Elite 430. Cooler
Master's newest addition to the Elite series
retains an identical interior build existing
since the Elite 370, but gave it a unified paint
job and new exterior shell on the RC-430-KWN1
model. The Elite 430 is small and light, yet
maximizes interior space to fit even the longest
graphic cards. This new release is aimed to be
competitive among the mid tower market,

How to Resize a Microsoft
Virtual Hard Drive (VHD) File
Tuesday July
20 @ 08:04:19 GMT +02:00
|
|
Sysadmingeek posted a guide about resizing a
Microsoft Virtual Hard Drive (VHD) File When
you create a Microsoft Virtual Hard Drive either
through Virtual PC or Virtual Server, you have
to specify the maximum size of the file up
front. While you can set the VHD to be a fixed
or dynamically sized file, the total size the
VHD is determined at the time you create it.
Over time, however, you may want to increase the
total size of the VHD file as requirements for
the system change to allow more space for
installed programs and data files.
Increasing the Size of the VHD File
With the help of the freely available VHD
Resizer tool, you can expand the size of a VHD
using it?s simple wizard interface. When opening
VHD Resizer the wizard prompts you for the
source VHD file to resize.

50 Hour World Gaming Record
Title is Established
Tuesday July
20 @ 08:47:50 GMT +02:00
|
July 19, 2010, Rotterdam, The Netherlands --
Vogel’s www.vogels.com, the leading European
market leader in Audio/Video & TV mounting
solutions, announced today that the Guinness
World Record for non-stop gaming has been broken
by six Dutch gamers during a 50 hour gaming
marathon that started on Fri, July 16th at 12:55
PM Central European Time (CET), in Dixons,
Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
The six gamers played Red Dead Redemption
non-stop on a Sony PlayStation®3 (PS3TM)) using
the TwistDock docking station to keep their
controllers continuously charged. The team of
six champion gamers included brothers Edward and
Maykel Leest from Boxmeer and Hengelo, Sven de
Vries from Lelystad, Renzo Bos from Baarlo,
Robbie van Eijkeren from Middelburg and Marcel
van Waardenburg from Amsterdam. The world record
award was given out by an official Guinness
World Records representative who was flown in
from London especially for the occasion.
The previous official world record for non-stop
gaming was set in September 2009 by Chirantan
Patnaik from India with a time of 40 hours and
20 minutes, which was easily trumped by the six
Dutch gamers. As the competition progressed, the
Dutch gamers’ solidarity grew and they decided
to sit and end the competition together. The
gamers made the unanimous decision to end the
attempt after an impressive 50 hours for a new
world record title. In addition to the world
record award, the new Guinness World Record
winners received a cash prize of EUR 1,000 and
six TwistDocks. “The contestants entered as
rivals but left as friends,” said Gaz Deaves,
official adjudicator of Guinness World Records
The Guinness World Record gaming event was an
initiative created by Vogel’s to announce the
new essential accessory for the PS3, Vogel’s
TwistDock www.twistdock.com. With TwistDock, the
PS3 is always ready for action -- even when the
computer is off, the controllers are always
being charged. And because of TwistDock’s
ingenious turning mechanism, it’s easy to stow
two controllers on the back of the TwistDock
and, by simply turning it around, have the
controllers available at the flick of a wrist
and always charged. There’s no more annoyance of
losing controllers in sofa cushions!
Gerdi Vogels, CEO of Vogel’s Products BV said,
“If you introduce a totally new product in the
market which makes dead controllers a thing of
the past, a new non-stop gaming world record is
a fantastic statement underlining the core value
of TwistDock.”
TwistDock will be available in the U.S. starting
4Q 2010 in time for the holiday season. For more
information, see the websites:

Howtogeek is showing how to import your emails
from Outlook to Apple Mail using Thunderbird
One issue to consider when switching from
Windows to OS X is email, as Windows users are
often rooted in Outlook. Today, we show how to
move from Outlook to Apples Mail.app using
Mozillas Thunderbird as a bridge to cross the
gap.
In Windows
To begin you will need to install Mozillas
Thunderbird on your Windows machine. Once it is
installed you do not need to add an account to
import anything. To begin the Import click on
Tools > Import
In this case we have only used Outlook for mail
so we will choose the Mail option, If you also
have other material that you would like to
import, it may be faster to import each section
separately. Once you have chosen your material,
click Next.

4K (4096 x 3072) video comes to
YouTube
Tuesday July
13
@ 08:47:50 GMT +02:00
|
YouTube is now supporting videos in 4K (4096 x
3072) resolution
From the announcement:
We always want videos on YouTube to be available
in the highest quality possible, as creators
intend. In December of last year, we announced
support for 1080p, or full HD. At 4096 x 3072
pixels, 4K is nearly four times the size of
1080p. To view any video in a source resolution
greater than 1080p, select "Original" in the
video quality pulldown menu.
To illustrate the power of 4K, please check out
the videos in this playlist; each one was
created by a filmmaker with access to a 4K
camera. (Be warned: watching videos in 4K, even
on YouTube, will require ultra-fast high-speed
broadband connections).
Because 4K represents the highest quality of
video available, there are a few limitations
that you should be aware of. First off, video
cameras that shoot in 4K aren’t cheap, and
projectors that show videos in 4K are typically
the size of a small refrigerator. And, as we
mentioned, watching these videos on YouTube will
require super-fast broadband.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 SLI

SD3500 IS Digital Elph Camera
A quote from
the article:
Canon was kind enough to send me over
another digital camera for review, this one
if the PowerShot SD3500 IS Digital Elph that
is a bit unique in that the LCD on the back
is actually a touch screen. On this camera
there really aren’t many physical buttons or
settings, everything is done via the touch
screen and because of this it’s huge, taking
up the entire back of the camera. Having
this large screen is nice, but it being a
touch screen you’ll find your fingerprints
all over it obscuring your view. Other than
the fingerprints the touch screen is
sensitive and it works great. The camera
itself takes very good pictures as you’ll
see inside with the many samples I have for
you.

AMD Athlon II X3 445 3.1GHz
Triple Core Processor Review
Tuesday July

Legit Reviews posted a review on the AMD Athlon
II X3 445 3.1GHz Triple Core Processor A quote
from the article:
The AMD Athlon II X3 445 is the fastest
triple-core processor in the Athlon II series
with its overall clock frequency of 3.1GHz. With
a street price of $84.99 and a 200MHz boost over
its predecessor is the Athlon II X3 445 worth
it? Read on to see how it performs in the
benchmarks and to see how it handles being
overclocked on our AMD 890GX test system.
The AMD Athlon II X3 445 was a processor I was
looking forward to working with when the
opportunity had presented itself. Not
necessarily because it is going to be the
fastest processor out there, but it only has
three active cores. Whats that mean? Well, that
most likely there is a fourth core under the
heat spreader. With any luck I would be able to
unlock the fourth core, and be able to test the
AMD Athlon II X3 445 as a Quad Core as well.
Fortunately there was a fourth core on the AMD
Athlon II X3 445...

ASUS GeForce GTX 465: A Step
Down
Tuesday July
06 @ 08:34:19 GMT +02:00
|
|
InsideHW.com has reviewed ASUS GeForce GTX465
graphics card As one would expect, after the
new GPU and the models based on it have been
presented, NVIDIA traditionally presents the
next step in the mainstream direction. Up to
now, that’s usually been models which offer
marginally weaker performance at a much more
accessible price. Just remember GeForce 8800GTS
320 MB, which was very popular upon premiering
on the market, with the mere difference of half
the memory of the stronger model present on the
card, both based on the G80 chip. However,
things aren’t looking as bright for the
Americans this time around. GeForce GTX 480 and
470 were tremendously late, and disappointed a
little in terms of performance even then,
bearing the initial expectations in mind.
Speaking of which, many expected GTX 465 to be
an excellent graphics card, although we must
admit that we were a bit sceptical. After the
release of official specifications, our doubts
only became more profound. No, performance
wasn’t the issue, we were only trying to
establish the chances it would have on the
market as an all-rounded product…

iPhone 4: the Ars Technica
review
Tuesday June
29 @ 08:22:05 GMT +02:00
|
Ars Technica posted a review on the iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 is Apple's "biggest leap since the
original iPhone," at least according to Steven
P. Jobs speaking at the WWDC 2010 keynote.
Indeed, in the three years since Apple first
introduced the iPhone, the device has come quite
far. At the same time, the basic concepts behind
the iPhone have remained very consistent over
the years. Despite regular modifications to the
OS and yearly hardware upgrades, the iPhone 4 is
very much a more modern, more capable version of
that original device that made such a splash in
the industry back in 2007.
We're not living with our heads in the sand: if
you have come to hate the iPhone, walled gardens
for developers, and everything Apple stands for,
you will likely hate the iPhone 4 and there's
nothing anyone can say to change your mind.
Luckily for you, Apple is no longer competing
against the saddest of the sad: there are now
plenty of solid phones from other manufacturers
that have multitouch screens, app stores of
their own, great cameras, and much more
extensible OSs. If you are curious about Apple's
latest offering, however, read on. The iPhone 4
is not without its flaws some of them more
serious than others but the device remains a
really cool evolution in Apple's lineup.

i5 655K processor
A quote from the article:
The Intel Core i5 655K is a dual core,
multithreaded CPU that is essentially just a
regular chip but comes with a few significant
exceptions. The first is that it has an unlocked
multiplier, the Holy Grail of overclocking,
allowing enthusiasts to push higher speeds. he
second is a new core revision has also arrived
on this chip, so more overclocking headroom
should theoretically result. And lastly is the
price tag, coming in about $210 USD, immensely
cheaper than what we normally see on Intel chips
with unlocked multipliers. So how fast can this
chip go? Read on to find out.

Benchmark Reviews posted an enthusiast custom PC
build guide
A quote from the article:
Performance is often attributed to expensive
objects of desire. In the automobile space, it's
generally accepted that a higher performing
vehicle will incur a significant markup over the
average fuel-efficient family offerings.
Computing is much the same. Retail OEM machines
are pre-built at predetermined price points,
often targeting the humble
office/Internet-centric user. Performance isn't
a primary concern for these systems, nor are
upgradability or customisation. On the other
hand, you have the expensive 'gamer' orientated
machines which cost several thousands of
dollars! This is where Benchmark Reviews steps
in. We've sat down and created three enthusiast
machines without the dreaded price gauge of many
pre-built setups - the 'Enthusiast PC Build' for
Q3 2010!

crowd that will benefit the most. Not only does
the card have a low-profile design, a low power
requirement and brackets that will allow it to
easily fit into any SFF case, but it also has
technologies for improving HD playback. This is
thanks to Avivo and Accelerated Video
Transcoding, both of which enhance HD content
though the graphics card, reducing the strain on
the system.

Zaward Vapor 120 CPU Cooler
Review
Tuesday June

|
|
PureOverclock has published a review of the
Zaward Vapor 120 CPU cooler. A quote from the
article:
Zaward might not be a household name, but you
may have seen their golfball-design fans at some
point. More interestingly, Zaward has used that
very innovative approach to their latest
flagship CPU cooler, the Vapor 120. It looks
rather unassuming, save for the fan, and the
price seems pretty good at about $50. But what's
really interesting is the performance numbers
this cooler managed to put up. To put it mildly,
we were shocked. Read on to find out why.

HP EliteBook 8440w Core i7

HotHardware.com posted a review on the HP
EliteBook 8440w Core i7 Notebook
A quote from the article:
Splitting the difference. Satisfying the niche.
Exploiting an opportunity. All of those phrases
could be used to accurately describe what HP has
done here with the new EliteBook 8440w. It's one
of the smaller options in the expanding
EliteBook family, yet also one of the most
powerful. That's not a combination you hear of
very often. In most circumstances, you'll need a
larger machine in order to accommodate more
powerful components within, mostly because the
more powerful components emit more heat than the
lower-end components. Hewlett-Packard, however,
has managed to get a Core i7 Mobile processor
within the frame of a 14" notebook and still
keep the heat under control. What we're left
with is an extremely unique machine that has
fewer competitive alternatives...

Hardware Canucks posted an article: USB 3.0 and
the Corsair Voyager GTR: A Match Made in Heaven?
When we first tested Corsair's Voyager GTR, we
found it to be limited by the USB 2.0 interface.
This didn't stop it from becoming the fastest
flash drive we have ever tested but the nagging
question persisted: what happens if you plug
this USB 2.0 drive into a next-generation USB
3.0 interface? In this testing update, we find
out.

Logitech: Setpoint 6.10.65
Tuesday June
15 @ 08:34:19 GMT +02:00
|
|
Software and drivers used to install and control
Logitech mice and keyboards MPORTANT: Before
installing this software, please review the
notes below.
Close all open applications and documents before
installing this software.
If you have an older version of SetPoint
installed on your system, it will be removed
while installing SetPoint 6.0 and your system
will reboot during the installation process.
If you are using Windows Vista and have a
previous version of SetPoint on your system, the
SetPoint 6.0 installation may take extra time to
complete. To shorten the overall installation
time, we recommend you uninstall the previous
version of SetPoint and reboot your system prior
to installing SetPoint 6.0.
Settings from previous versions of SetPoint 4.x
will not be preserved when you upgrade to
SetPoint 6.0. Settings from SetPoint 5.x will be
preserved.
If you don't see a picture of the device you are
configuring in SetPoint 6.0, check to see that
you are connected to the internet. The device
image should download automatically in the
background.
If your mouse or keyboard is connected to the
PS/2 port and you want it to be recognized by
SetPoint, you will need to activate the PS/2
driver. To do this, open SetPoint, select the
Tools tab, and click the "Install PS/2 Driver"
button. If the button is grayed out, it means a
PS/2 driver is already installed.
Changes from earlier versions of SetPoint:
The download size has been reduced by
approximately 60%. This has been achieved by
streamlining the code and removing device
pictures from the download package. SetPoint
will automatically download pictures in the
background for devices that are connected to
your system.
SetPoint 6.0 includes the control panels for
standard mice and keyboards (previously
supported in SetPoint 4.x) and gaming mice
(previously supported in SetPoint 5.x). This
reduces duplication of system components,
resulting in a smaller overall installation
size.
The SetPoint control panel for standard mice and
keyboards has been updated with a new
appearance.
Numerous bug fixes and stability enhancements
have been made in SetPoint 6.0
Download Instructions
Select either the 32-bit or 64-bit version and
press "Download" to begin. If you do not know
whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit system,
click on "Start", Right click on "Computer" and
select "Properties". It should list the type of
operating system being used.

Almost everyone who has went to buy power

are rated in Watts, UPS systems are rated in VA
or in both VA and Watts. This usually leads to
confusion as most people not only lack the
technical knowledge to understand the difference
between VA and Watt units but few might even

Samsung SyncMaster 2494HM DVI /
HDMI 24-in LCD Monitor Review
Tuesday June
08 @ 08:22:05 GMT +02:00
|
OCIA.net has posted their review of the Samsung
SyncMaster 2494HM DVI / HDMI 24-in LCD Monitor
A quote from the article:
If you are frugal like myself, spending money on
anything that isn't a necessity to life can be a
task. One way I have recently discovered to
offset this ouch moment is to buy used products,
also known as refurbished or re-certified in the
tech industry. Millions of people buy and sell
used goods on sites like eBay and Craigslist
every day. Why take the hefty financial hit on
something that is going to drop in value rather
quickly when you can pick up a slightly used
model and save a substantial amount of money?
Often times these refurbished or re-certified
items might just be missing a manual or a cable
and never made it out of the factory and thus,
are still new. Furthermore, depending on where
you buy a refurbished item from, a warranty may
still accompany the item as is the case with
today's display we have for review, the Samsung
SyncMaster 2494HM DVI / HDMI 24" LCD Monitor.

AMD Athlon-II X2-260 Regor
Processor Review
Tuesday June

|
Benchmark Reviews posted a review on the AMD
Athlon-II X2-260 Regor Processor
A quote from the article:
In early May 2010, AMD released a new series of
processors that fills in some of the gaps in
their Athlon-II and Phenom-II Dual, Triple, and
Quad-Core Lines. Most of the newly released
processors are really just 100MHz clock speed
bumps on the old versions. In this article
Benchmark Reviews focuses on the newly released
AMD Athlon-II X2-260 Regor AM3 ADX260OCK23GQ
processor. Based on the Regor core, the Athlon-II
X2-260 has a 3.2GHz clock speed, up 100MHz from
the Athlon-II X2-255 at 3.1Ghz which was
released in January 2010. The Athlon-II X2-260
is at the very low end of the newly released
processors and represents a value based market
at only $76. Benchmark Reviews is going to
directly compare the Athlon-II X2-260 to its
predecessor to see just what advantages can be
found in the new chip running 100MHz faster.

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 465 Debuts
Tuesday June
01 @ 08:49:12 GMT +02:00
|
HotHardware takes a look at NVIDIA's GeForce GTX
465 video card
It has been about two months since NVIDIA
officially unveiled their first pair of DirectX
11 graphics cards based on the highly
anticipated Fermi architecture, the flagship
GeForce GTX 480 and the GeForce GTX 470. As is
typically the case, when NVIDIA--or ATI for that
matter-- releases a new high-end GPU, lower-end
derivatives are eventually introduced to
maximize utilization of available yields and of
course deliver product at more cost-conscious
price points. Today's launch of the new GeForce
GTX 465 is just such a move. The new GeForce GTX
465 features the same GF100 GPU as its
higher-end cousins, the GTX 480 and GTX 470, but
a few of its functional units have been
disabled. The result is a somewhat less
powerful, but also less expensive, Fermi-based
graphics card. Journey on for our full analysis
of the product on the pages ahead...

The Ultimate Graphics Cards
Round-up: Spring 2010
Tuesday June
01 @ 08:47:50 GMT +02:00
|
InsideHW compared all graphics cards that can be
found on most markets
When the current state of the graphics card
market is compared to the situation of four or
five years ago, one might think that it’s much
simpler to buy a graphics card nowadays. Indeed,
the numerous LE and SE models are long gone and
there is no covert memory bus halving, when
users ended up with performance far inferior to
those in reviews. You may stumble upon a few
models containing DDR2 memory, instead of the
referent models’ GDDR3, but these are usually
end-of-life products at the rock bottom of the
current product gamma, so buyers actually do end
up with the performance they paid for these
days. Still, the unequal speed of new chip
development in the two competitor companies,
followed by strong economic impacts last year
and a no-holds-barred battle for market
dominance, caused the existence of a
higher-than-needed number of similarly priced
models present on the market at the moment, so
customers may be in doubt as to which card will
give them the best performance in a given price
range. That’s why we decided to make a test of
all models from the current generation available
at the market…

Tuesday June

Hardware Canucks posted a review of the new ASUS
GeForce GTX 465 1GB Voltage Tweak Edition
graphics card
A quote from the article:
With NVIDIA finally launching their high-end
GTX 470 and GTX 480, it was only a matter of
time until lower priced 400-series cards started
hitting the market. The GTX 465 is the first of
these cut down cards and it aims for a target
performance level between ATI's HD 5850 and HD
5830. Priced at $280, it definitely has pricing
on its side but can it bring the necessary
in-game performance to the table as well?

Puran Defrag Free Edition 7.1
Tuesday May
18 @ 08:49:12 GMT +02:00
|
Puran Defrag is a very simple disk defragmenter
which will defrag the files and optimize your
system, collecting all the fragments of a file
and putting them together, as well as moving
some frequently used files and all directories
to faster disk areas.
The files saved on your hard disk will become
fragmented for various reasons. Because of this,
your hard disk is extra busy gathering data from
different fragments located at various locations
on the hard disk in order to access your files.
This process degrades your hard disk performance
and overall system speed which gets gradually
worse over time. In addition, the read/write
speed of your hard disk varies by location and
the files on your hard disk are randomly
distributed. Therefore, you lose any potential
speed gains from other system optimization
programs.
Puran Defrag provides the solution! Puran Defrag
is a very simple disk defragmenter which will
defrag the files and optimize your system,
collecting all the fragments of a file and
putting them together, as well as moving some
frequently used files and all directories to
faster disk areas. This process boosts your hard
disk performance and thus overall system speed.
In addition it reduces wear and tear on your
hard disk, thereby increasing its life span.
Now get a professional defragmenter for your
computer at no price at all. This is Puran
Defrag Free Edition which is exactly the same as
its commercial version except you do not need to
pay for it.

Sapphire Pure Mini 785G AM3:
Multimedia Mobo of Decent Performance
Tuesday May

|
|
InsideHW.com has reviewed Sapphire Pure Mini
785G AM3 motherboard The demand for PCs
packing low power consumption and solid
performance is hardly in decline. Intel struck
big time with their Atom platform. However,
although it had solid CPU power, sufficient for
most everyday office tasks, the graphics system
wasn’t truly able to provide full multimedia
enjoyment. The “inheritor” in the form of
Nvidia’s ION platform rectified this drawback,
but CPU performance remained the same, since the
very heart of the system was still based on
Intel’s Atom. More demanding users, who didn’t
find Atom’s performance satisfactory, had to
turn to other solutions with better performance,
but also higher consumption. One of those was
based on AMD’s well-known 785G chipset, which
brought good performance and an excellent
integrated DirectX 10 graphics card…

NVIDIA apologizes to our customers that

customers that did experience problems, in
almost every case reverting back to our 196.21
driver immediately resolved their issues. We
continue to work closely with our add-in-card
partners and PC manufacturers to help resolve
any additional customer issues not solved by
reverting to the earlier driver. Any NVIDIA

Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) 5.0.0
Tuesday May

|
Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM
drives. Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as
possible into one bootable CD.
You need the Ultimate Boot CD if you want to:
Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM
drives. More and more PCs are shipped without
floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal
pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on
them.
Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the
floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy
drive, it is still much much faster to run your
diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather
than wait for the tool to load from the floppy
drive.
Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible
into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid
digging into the dusty box to look for the right
floppy disk, but simply run them all from a
single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!
This will create an ISO image which you can use
to create a bootable CD with your favorite CD
burning software.

In the beginning of 2010, Intel presented their
first CPUs manufactured in 32 nm lithography,
therefore beginning the Tick phase. This refers
to Intel’s development model, called Tick-Tock,
designating two phases in development. The Tick
phase means presenting a new manufacturing
process developed on current architecture,

QNAP TS-459 Pro 4-Bay TurboNAS
Review

|
TweakTown posted a review on the QNAP TS-459 Pro
4-Bay TurboNAS A quote from the article:
At CES Cameron and I paid a visit to QNAP’s
booth to take a look at several new NAS
appliances and servers the company launched at
the show. Little did we know that the new
product lineup would be so extensive, almost a
top to bottom refresh. The first of the new dual
core Intel Atom products has been here for a
month now and I have to come right out and say
that I am very impressed. It is a good thing too
since the TS-419P TurboNAS we reviewed last year
didn’t fare as well as we were hoping.
Even though the TS-419P and TS-459 look nearly
identical outside, the two are completely
different inside. The 419P used a Marvell
processor and in our testing we felt that it and
the firmware held the NAS back from performing
as well as it could have. The latest run of
firmware from QNAP and the new dual core Atom
processor have now cleared those issues, but it
comes at a higher initial cost to users. We will
touch more on the cost and the additional
productivity in the conclusion.

G.Skill ECO 4GB DDR3-1333 Memory
Kit Review

|
|
Benchmark Reviews posted a review on the G.Skill
ECO 4GB DDR3-1333 Memory Kit A quote from the
article:
In the industry of technology, brands offering
similar products without innovating will not be
easily adopted by the enthusiast market. If we
talk about memory, then the mayor factors are
frequency, latency and of course... price. Intel
specifications for Core i3/i5/i7 products
recommend using a maximum DRAM voltage of 1.65v.
While most brands try to fit on Intel´s limits
on the high side, G.Skill is trying something
different. The G.Skill ECO F3 10666CL7D 4GB Dual
Channel Kit is intended to run at 1333MHz with
barely 1.35 volts benefiting both high-end
enthusiasts who want better Overclocks and lower
temps, or simply those who want to build an HTPC
an every shaved watt can be the difference.
Benchmark Reviews will test the G.Skill ECO kit
to check if this kind of memory is able to do
that difference (considering that frequency and
latency are not a major factor on Intel chipsets
anymore).

ThinkComputers.org posted a guide on how to
Flash your motherboards system BIOS
Recently Bob did an article on finding out the
model of your motherboard. Since you usually
find out the version of your boards BIOS at the
same time, I thought that an article on
updating, or flashing, your BIOS would be a good
idea. There were numerous articles on the
subject back when I first got into building, and
all of them involved a 3.5 floppy drive. Today,
nearly all motherboards have multiple options
for flashing the BIOS, and normally a floppy
isnt required.

Bluetooth Transceiver. Purchasers of the
Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000 must ensure they
have a Bluetooth enabled computer (either

Auzentech X-Fi Bravura sound
card review
Tuesday May
04 @ 08:15:28 GMT +02:00
|
|
APH Networks has published a new review on the
Auzentech X-Fi Bravura sound card A quote from
the article:
When we reviewed the Auzentech X-Fi HomeTheater
HD a few weeks back, I was without a doubt
extremely impressed by the overall performance
of the card. Combining the best hardware (For
the most part, anyway) for impressive sound
quality across the board, the X-Fi HomeTheater
HD is really a true audiophile's dream. But
let's be realistic here -- unless you are really
picky in audio and searching for the best of the
best, the rest of the crowd may find it just a
bit hard to justify the cost of a sound card
that pretty much retails for more than most
motherboards at press time. What if you are a
casual audiophile looking for a sound card that
delivers more than what integrated audio
solutions offer, but at a more affordable price
tag? Auzentech might just have the solution for
you. The Auzentech X-Fi Bravura is a PCI Express
based audio board that costs roughly half of
what the X-Fi HomeTheater HD commands at the
time of writing this review, yet retains some of
the electronics found on its bigger brother such
as the bi-polarized aluminum electrolytic Nichon
MUSE ES audio grade capacitors, Cirrus Logic
CS4382A 24-bit 192 kHz 8-channel DAC, and a
handful of other things. It even has fully
swappable operational amplifiers on all
channels, which even the X-Fi HomeTheater HD
does not have! Is the Auzentech X-Fi Bravura an
appealing solution to the masses, or is it just
riding on the brand, a cheaped-out version that
you shouldn't bother with? We took the liberty
to find all the answers for you in our review
today!

CPU Round-up: $100 - $200 Intel
and AMD Processors Tested
Tuesday April
20 @ 08:56:45 GMT +02:00
|
TechSpot posted a CPU roundup of $100 - $200
Intel and AMD processors
Building your own computer can be very time
consuming and rewarding at the same time. While
piecing the new hardware together is usually a
relatively easy task, picking out the right
components in the first place is what can make
it more troublesome. The first component that
must be decided upon before any build takes
place is the processor, as this will dictate
which motherboard can be used and often the
memory type.
With so many choices at your disposal, we
understand it's hard not to become overwhelmed.
Therefore we have taken a dozen processors
priced within the $100 - $200 price range and
pitted them against each other, so you can draw
clear conclusions on what will suit you the
best. We have also added a segment that compares
all 12 processors on a clock-for-clock basis.
This comparison of architectures aims to remove
the operating frequency impact on performance
and allows us to show you exactly how these CPUs
perform side-by-side.
Besides the processors themselves, we will be
also taking under consideration the value and
performance differences between the platforms
used, so motherboards and chipsets will be
factored into the whole equation. And now, let's
meet the contenders both from the green and blue
camps...

Why 99% of Power Supply
Reviews Are Wrong
Tuesday April
20 @ 08:49:12 GMT +02:00
|
Hardware Secrets posted an article why the vast
majority of power supply reviews published on
the web are wrong
A quote from the article:
With computers (and users) asking for better
power supplies, nothing more natural than
reviewing websites publishing power supply
reviews. But contrary to other hardware parts
like CPUs, motherboards and video cards, one
must have deep electronics knowledge in order to
test a power supply. Since most reviewers are
simply users with a above-the-average knowledge
in computers – but not in electronics – almost
all PSU reviews posted on the web are completely
wrong and they do more harm than good, as some
websites recommend products that are really
flawed. We updated this article where we explain
in details why 99% of power supply reviews
posted on the web are wrong and we hope that
reviewers learn more about the subject by
reading this article and also that users learn
how to identify a bad review.

The Guru of 3D checked out the Zalman VF3000N
VGA cooler It's no secret that hardware runs
hot these days. And that created a gap in the
graphics card market as the ODMs always will try
and put an affective yet cheap cooler on top of
your graphics card. A couple of names out there
have perfectly interesting solution, Artic
Cooling for example makes some really good VGA
coolers. But then there's always Zalman, they
recently released their VF3000 series graphics
card coolers for both (VF3000A) ATI's latest
4000/5000 series graphics cards and the VF3000N
cooler for the GeForce GTX 260,275,280 and 285.
Over the next few pages we'll startup a large
photo-session where we'll guide you through the
product, its installation and then of course
temperature and sound-pressure measurements.
Have a peek at the prepped and finished card
which just had a majestic makeover as it is
mounted with a Zalman VF3000N cooler.

Hardware Canucks posted a review of NVIDIA's
Optimus Technology featuring the new Asus UL50VF
Notebook. A quote from the article:
Battery life has always been paramount in both
netbooks and laptops but lengthening it usually
comes at the expense of performance. NVIDIA
claims their new Optimus technology offers the
best of both worlds by seamlessly switching
between an on-board dedicated graphics chip and
an IGP. Does it work as well as NVIDIA wants us
to believe? We find out in this review.
